Deportment is your overall appearance and the way you present yourself, in speech and in actions. You will find that when you dress and act like a lady, you will be treated like one. Men tend to be more inclined to act like gentlemen toward ladies who are dressed femininely and modestly.
Feminism has had a terrible impact on our nation, bringing women into men's roles, and placing men in women's roles. Part of this was bringing about a change in the way we dress. In bygone days it was scandalous for a woman to appear in pants - it was like she was wearing her undergarments in public. But as more and more women wore pants, it became accepted. It is not right that we should sometimes question, "Is that a girl or a boy?" We need to make it obvious that we are ladies, by wearing modest, feminine clothes. Deuteronomy 22:5 says: "The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman's garment: for all that do so are an abomination unto the LORD thy God." I think you will agree that this verse makes it quite clear that dressing in pants and other unfeminine clothing is very displeasing to God. There is not much doubt about the word "abomination". It means abhorrence, disgust, hatred. We need to strive to dress in a way that is pleasing to the Lord.
How does one act like a lady? It is possible that a girl can be faultlessly dressed, and yet act very masculine and unladylike. A lady speaks gently, not boisterously. She moves gracefully and carries herself with dignity, rather than slouching and shuffling around. She is polite, and answers when spoken to in a respectful and gracious manner. When my sister and I were little girls, we had a problem with meeting new people. We would be very shy, and hide behind my mother's skirts, not daring to look strangers in the face. Then one day, Mom told us that was over. She said that whenever we met someone new, we needed to remember to have "Gracious Eyeballs" - look people in the face with a smile, and say, "It's a pleasure to meet you." Each time we would go places where Mom knew we would meet new people, she would remind us, "Remember, girls, Gracious Eyeballs!" and that would help us to meet new people with graciousness and politeness.
